CRAFTSMAN POTTER

BEN McMANIGAN is a craftsman potter working in Cornwall, making hand thrown studio pottery in porcelain and stoneware clays with interesting and unusual glazes.

Ben's speciality is 'Raku' ware. This is a technique where, during the glaze firing, pots are removed from the kiln with tongs, whilst red hot, and plunged into sawdust, leaves, or other organic material. This produces colourful and metallic effects on the surface of the pot which subtly change with room temperature, humidity and light. The process although unpredictable, leads to beautiful and unique results.
